To help them make sense of what they were seeing, Simpson and Fritsch engaged the services of a former British intelligence agent and Russia expert named Christopher Steele. It also became clearer that the focus of Fusion’s research going forward would be Trump’s entanglements with Russia. In the fall of 2015, Fusion GPS was hired to look into Donald Trump’s finances. The deeper Fusion dug, the more it began to notice names that Simpson and Fritsch had come across during their days covering Russian corruption. In their recent book, Crime in Progress, the founders of Fusion GPS- Glenn Simpson and Peter Fritsch, two former reporters at The Wall Street Journal-tell their side of the story. Not surprisingly, Fusion GPS, the political opposition research company that commissioned the Steele Dossier, has found itself at the center of the biggest news story on the planet-a story that would lead to accusations of witch hunts, a relentless campaign of persecution by congressional Republicans, bizarre conspiracy theories and even an investigation of the original FBI investigation launched by Attorney General William Barr. While the famous Steele Dossier didn’t start any of the official inquiries, its memos are essential to the Trump–Russia story. ![]() His recent impeachment had deep connections to the multiple investigations surrounding the Trump–Russia relationship, including the FBI investigation and the Mueller Report. Trump and Republicans have repeatedly denounced the first dossier as false and "fake news," and the Justice Department inspector general concluded in December 2019 that the FBI relied too heavily on its unverified claims to seek surveillance warrants against the former Trump campaign aide Carter Page.Donald Trump’s relationship with Russia’s government and some of its wealthy oligarchs has become one of the defining stories of his presidency. None of these details have been corroborated. The document also contained claims that Russia had incriminating material on Trump, including a tape of him engaging in sexual activities with prostitutes in a Moscow hotel room in 2013. That report detailed numerous claims of ties between the Trump campaign and Russia, and it came to the attention of the Senate Intelligence Committee and the FBI as they investigated Russia's meddling in the 2016 presidential election. Steele's first dossier was leaked to and published by BuzzFeed in January 2017. The Telegraph said the second dossier relied on different sources from the first one but did not say who those sources were. The document, which Insider has not independently corroborated, reportedly "contains raw intelligence that makes further claims of Russian meddling in the US election and also references claims regarding the existence of further sex tapes," The Telegraph's Robert Mendick and Lucy Fisher wrote.
